Program Description

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder course provides a route to understanding the complexity of autism, and examines proven interventions that are effective in teaching children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The focus is on practical, evidence-based strategies to help you modify your instruction, structure the classroom, and modify the curriculum to help maximize the learning potential of these children. This approach builds upon students own strengths and existing abilities to improve their engagement in learning. The course also examines how to prevent and intervene with challenging behaviour and become familiar with the principles of functional behavioural assessment to enhance student’s emotional literacy and social skills.

The course will help you gain an understanding of the unique profile of students with ASD and taking a strength focus, identify strategies for differentiating your instructional methods to support these learners. The course will examine modifications to the curriculum and teaching approach to support students with ASD in their classroom. The course also explores the use of Individual Learning Plans as a tool to establish and monitor learning goals and as a way to set targets for students with ASD.
